TWERKUMENTARY
a film about twerking, freedom of expression
and how music and the internet influence cultures around the world
How did an underground and controversial dance like twerking become a socially acceptable, viral pop phenomenon that has spread across the globe like wildfire? And what it is exactly? Where does it come from?
From fertility dances in the Paleolithic time to the creation of the hashtag in San Francisco, from Ivory Coast’s Mapouka and its influence on the New Orleans style of dance to a Chinese sex toy called Twerking Butt, TWERKUMENTARY follows Los Angeles-based Italian director Spaghetto on a journey across the U.S., Europe, Japan, South America, and Australia to discover twerking’s anomalous cultural evolution.
Entertaining and at times humorous, TWERKUMENTARY digs into the anthropological and sociological aspects of the pop phenomenon and brings the audience to an unexpected, deeper conversation about empowerment, cultural appropriation, freedom of expression, and the undeniable influence that the internet and social media have on cultures and the internationalization of trends.
One thing is for sure…once you’ve watched TWERKUMENTARY, don’t be surprised if you have the sudden urge to do a little booty shaking of your own!
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
“Making this documentary has been a long and interesting journey that took me all over the world. It started because I wanted people to understand more about the origins of the dance and I also wanted to explore some of the topics that its pop evolution generated (cultural appropriation, feminism/freedom of expression, women’s body image, social media madness and trends). With this idea in mind, the film incorporates a lot of different elements from the roots of twerk in the Paleolithic time, to its role in contemporary pop culture, and everything in between. I’m very excited to be finally able to share my film with the world!”
